My wife and I have been married for almost two years. It would be nice to have that honymoon we never got
My husband and I saved for 3 years so that we could return to our beloved Italy and the little gritty town of Vietri on the Amalfi coast. We were only gone a few days (only made it to France) and returned because of a family illness. That was 1 1/2 years ago and in another1 1/2 years or so, we want to return again.
The elderly owners of the Villa and their son (on the first trip we made) made us and our friends a pizza dinner down in the courtyard in their ancient brick oven. A long makeshift table, with rickety chairs and mismatched dishes and pitchers of red wine, made the night so delightful, not to mention the constant bickering between mother and son on how to make the pizza dough and toppings – it was like music.
The Villa in Vietri which we rented is old and needs so much repair – drains that don’t drain and a washing machine that religiously overflows, electricity that magically turns itself off and on, and the often unexpected visits by the elderly landlords at any time of day or night is all par for the course. Oh yes, and during rain season, we slept with a pot between us to catch the drops coming through the attica roof where we stayed.
We cooked, that year, most every night, picking up our treasures for dinner from the little shops on the dusty cobblestone alley ways. The shop owners and the local artist got to know us – the called me Diana and my husband Douglas, Dooglas. Interestingly, we seemed to communicate with them all even though we didn’t speak Italian.
The best news of all though, more than any memories of Italy, is that my daughter is now completely well and our lives are returning back to normal so we are optimistic that we will return.
We may not win this contest, however, we’ll always have our memories.
I should mention, that Barilla pasta is our pasta of choice and I enjoy cooking Italian at least twice a week here where we live in our little town of Murrayville in British Columbia – often making trips to Commercial Drive (Little Italy) to bring home our authentic ingredients.
